2005 New Folk Songwriting Contest Entry Rules
  1. All writer-performers are invited to send the Minnesota Folk Festival a cassette tape or a home-burned CD containing two original songs that are previously unrecorded and non-commercially released (exception: independent releases that are sold only at artist's gigs or on their website; less than 3,000 total printed/sold.)
    Please note: The CD/tape should contain ONLY the 2 songs you are submitting. If there are 3 or more songs on the CD/tape it is automatically disqualified. Entry fees & tapes/CDs cannot be returned.
  2. These previously unrecorded, non-commercially released songs may be performed by the writer alone or by a group which must include the writer or writers.
  3. Do not send any lyrics, publicity, business cards, etc. Your submission should include only your tape/CD and check/money order.
  4. The songs submitted must be the songs you will perform at the festival if you are a finalist.
  5. The writer(s) retains all rights to the songs.
  6. No performer who appears as a billed artist participating in concerts and/or workshops at the 2005 Minnesota Folk Festival over the two days may also be part of the New Folk Songwriting Contest.
  7. Anyone may enter except those billed as performers in 2004 or those who have been selected as the winner of the New Folk Songwriting Contest in the past 2 years (2003 and 2004).
  8. Each writer may have up to two accompanists perform backup instrumental. The writer will have a vocal mike and an instrumental mike or DI. There will be two other instrumental mikes or DIs available for backup. No amps or drum kits will be available. One set of keyboards will be set up and available.
  9. The Minnesota Folk Festival will select 30 finalists and will invite those finalists to be guests of the festival during the 2 day period, June 25 & 26.
  10. 15 finalists will perform each day, Saturday and Sunday, June 25 & 26, 2005 to provide the judges with an opportunity to select 3 award winners who will perform at the Award Winners Concert, Sunday, June 26.
  11. Do not enter if you are not available both days, June 25 & 26, 2005.
  12. All tapes must be accompanied by a $4 entry fee. Checks should be made payable to the Minnesota Folk Festival. Send your entries to the Minnesota Folk Festival, 626 Armstrong Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55102.
  13. Include your name, address, zip code, phone number and email address on your cassette/CD label, so you can be notified. Please print clearly.
  14. The First Place Winner will receive a $200 award and will be hired as a name artist for 2006. 2nd place will receive $100. A $100 prize will also be awarded to "Best Performer." All entries must be received at the festival office by date May 6, 2005, 5 pm. Winners will be posted on the Minnesota Folk Festival web site by May 19, 2005.
  15. Finalists will receive two 2-day passes for June 25 & 26. Others participating with you, if any, must purchase a ticket to be admitted with you.
  16. Any rules that are misprinted or printed incomplete in other publications are not official and we take no responsibility for any disqualification resulting from not following the complete instructions listed above.
